The fiery political fight in Washington to repeal health care reform continues, splitting the political parties and elevating uncertainty about the future of medical care. The reality, however, is that American healthcare is well along an irreversible path of reform - enrolling millions, reshaping insurance markets, and reducing medical expenditures. The steady progress of health reform raises new questions and debates about who is covered, how generously, and at what cost to taxpayers. The real action along the reform path is taking place at the level of individual states. This talk will set New Mexico’s possibilities in the context of the diverse experiences of other states. Larry Jacobs is co-chair of the Scholars Strategy Network’s Working Group on the Implementation of Health Reform and the co-author of Health Care Reform and American Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford, 2010). He is also the Walter F. and Joan Mondale Professor of Political Studies and Director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota.
