In the context of national health care reform, this Workshop will consider the lack of insurance coverage among Mexican-origin populations, particularly in Texas and New Mexico. There, while 16% of non-Hispanic whites were without coverage for all or part of 2007, roughly 40% of Hispanics were uninsured. Along with the lack of retirement coverage, this situation is a tragedy for the Mexican-origin population in the Southwestern U.S. But it also has broader, longer-term implications, especially given the uneven age distribution of ethnic groups. The Workshop will explore the social and policy implications of these circumstances, particularly from the perspective of different political philosophies.
