It’s the only health policy center dedicated to increasing the number of experts from Latino and American Indian communities across the nation. |
With financial, academic and networking support provided by the Center, your Ph.D. work and your unique perspective into the issues affecting the Latino and American Indian communities will have an enormous impact on the future of your community's health and well-being.
By contributing to the national health policy debate, you can improve U.S. health policy and the public's health. The RWJF Center for Health Policy ensures that you gain the experience and expertise to develop and implement innovative solutions to vexing societal issues.
Doctoral Fellowships
These awards are open to UNM Scholars currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program. Six of the ten annual awards are reserved for students in a Ph.D. program in Economics, Political Science, or Sociology.
Dissertation Fellowships in all disciplines
The awards are open to Scholars currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program at UNM that demonstrate an interest in health services research or policy analysis. Preference will be given to students who are ABD (all coursework and qualifying exams successfully completed), and working on a dissertation that is associated with the mission of the RWJF Center.
Visiting Scholar Research Fellowships
Scholars must have a doctoral degree in a relevant social science discipline from an accredited U.S. institution other than the University of New Mexico, and have completed all course and examination requirements for the doctorate by the time of the initial appointment. Scholars should have a background and/or interest in health services research or policy analysis associated with Latinos and American Indians in the United States. Applicants must affiliate and work with a UNM faculty member in their respective social science discipline, and preferences will be given to applicants from Economics, Political Science or Sociology programs.
Post Doctoral Fellowships
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant social science discipline (awarded by the date of application) and be approved by one of the UNM social science departments affiliated with the RWJF Center and should have a research agenda that demonstrates a focus on the Center’s mission. These awards are limited to applicants who have not received their highest academic degree from the University of New Mexico. The Center offers a post doctoral award to Scholars with a background and/or interest in health services research or policy analysis associated with Hispanics/Latinos and Native Americans in the United States.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Doctoral Program in Nursing with a Concentration in Health Policy Fellowships
Applicants must be accepted or currently enrolled in the RWJF Ph.D. in Nursing with a Concentration in Health Policy. The RWJF Ph.D. in Nursing with a Concentration in Health Policy aims to prepare nurses to become leaders in health policy at the local, state and national levels through their research and advocacy. It works in partnership with the Center, and its students participate in interdisciplinary activities with doctoral students from the social science disciplines at the Center.

Scholars interested in becoming one of the Center’s Fellows should contact their department graduate advisor or their department chair to discuss their eligibility for an award and for additional information on the nominating process.
Fellows must be nominated by their department in order to be considered for one of the RWJF Center for Health Policy Fellowships
Departments seek Fellowship Candidates who demonstrate:
• A capacity and potential to complete a doctoral degree in the discipline
• An interest in health services research
• A genuine commitment to the primary mission of the RWJF Center, namely their dedication to increasing the number of leaders from Latino, American Indian and other underrepresented groups that will shape the future of health and health care in our nation.
