Matías Fontenla, PhD
Dr. Matías Fontenla is an Asst. Professor of Economics at the University of New Mexico. He received his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003. His research on health focuses on the procyclical relationship between mortality and the business cycle in the U.S. In "Are Recessions Good for Everyone's Health?" Fontenla, Gonzalez and Quast find that this relationship is much more pronounced for latinos than for the white population in the U.S..

Dr. Fontenla's other research interests are Macroeconomics, Development Economics, Growth and Financial Intermediation. His underlying motivation has always been to understand phenomena and contribute to solving problems related to Latin America and the Hispanic population in the U.S. Dr. Fontenla is also affiliated with the Latin American and Iberian Institute at UNM.
