Gabe Sanchez named RWJ Foundation Center for Health Policy Executive Director

Provost Chaouki Abdallah announced that Gabriel R. Sanchez has been named executive director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Center for Health Policy at the University of New Mexico. Sanchez is an associate professor of political science at UNM and has served as the interim director of the RWJF Center over the past year.
Established in 2007, the RWJF Center for Health Policy is a physical, educational and cultural home for promising health policy scholars and researchers from underrepresented groups and diverse backgrounds.

“Dr. Sanchez has excelled in his time serving as interim director of the RWJF Center for Health Policy,” said Abdallah. “I fully expect that the Center will continue to benefit from his experience and leadership.”

"Having this permanent leadership role in the RWJF Center at UNM provides me with an ideal opportunity to use my research and mentoring skills to help develop the next generation of diverse leaders who will leave UNM prepared to engage in important work aimed at decreasing racial and ethnic health inequalities, and I also look forward to continuing our efforts at the Center to collaborate more widely across the UNM and larger community," Sanchez said.

Sanchez has a wealth of experience mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds, and is also currently serving as the director of the American Economic Association’s Summer Minority Training Program at UNM. In his prior role as an assistant director of the RWJF Center he was responsible for curriculum planning and mentoring of the RWJF PhD Fellows. Sanchez is a nationally recognized expert in both Latino politics and health care policy.
